Background:

Punjab Gatka Association had been constituted during the month of December 2008 after due consideration and deliberations in the marathon meetings held under the aegis of Hon’ble Singh Sahib Giani Tirlochan Singh Ji, Jathedar Takhat Sri Keshgarh Sahib, Sri Anandpur Sahib and Head Granthi of the Holy Takhat Giani Sukhwinder Singh Ji along with various Sikh Saints including heads of various Nihang Singh Dals and Gatka Akharas at Sri Anandpur Sahib.

Objective:

The core purpose of the association was to manage, promote, standardize and popularise the game of Gatka and other martial arts on amateur basis and to give its decisions/evaluations on all matters which may be referred to it. It is noteworthy that till date the centuries old historical Gatka including other Sikh traditional Martial Art games have not been accorded due acknowledgment, recognition and participation by any sports body or government.

Aims:

The aims chalked out by the association are;

1.       To encourage the formation of Gatka associations at Districts/Block levels;
2.       To arrange, encourage & control the Punjab Gatka championships, matches & other contests;
3.       To arrange, control, regulate and if necessary, finance the visits of other States Gatka teams;
4.       To arrange, control, regulate and if necessary, finance the visits of the state or any other state teams to foreign countries;
5.       To organize coaching camps scheme, exhibition matches at National and International levels for holy/ religious occasions also;
6.       To perform all such other acts as may seem to the association to be convenient and or conducive to the attainment to the objects of the association;
7.       To make arrangements for publicity of the objectives of the society i.e. by means of posters, pamphlets and holding of various competitions/
functions/ seminars/ workshops etc;
8.       To honor the individuals or organizations for their social contributions;
9.       To enhance the knowledge of Punjabi, Punjabiat and Punjabi culture in order to promote the concepts, history and symbolic representation of culture as a whole;
10.     To preserve & promote Punjabi culture, art and heritage at National and International level through cultural exchange by means of media also;
11.     To incorporate youth population and diverse ethnicities into its noble mission of producing beautiful and friendly competitions and exciting new projects;
12.     To keep young children and teenagers involved in healthy physical activities and creative art work;
13.     To work for various social causes like protection and preservation of environment, clean and green the nation;
14.     To work for social causes like deaddiction, prohibition, antismoking, dowry prohibition, abolition of female foeticide, women empowerment, protection of human rights, traffic awareness, pollution control etc;
15.     To work for poor, needy and ruralites for their upliftment and overall development;

Way to accomplish mission: 

To successfully achieve the above outlined projects and social objects to be undertaken by the Punjab Gatka Association, the association would get in touch with sympathisizers and well wishers to get the donations/ grants. The Executive Committee would be responsible for performing all the functions of the association and to take all decisions for the welfare of the association. The betterment of the Gatka, eradication of evils and progress of the community would be sole mission of the association and each member would work with full zeal, zest and commitment so that the goals of the better world could be achieved.

The income and property of the association would be applied solely towards the promotion of the objects/projects of the association set forth in the Memorandum of association and no portion thereof would be paid to or transferred directly or indirectly to the members of the association.

The accounts would be maintained from April to March in a financial year and the accounts would be operated jointly by the President, Finance Secretary along with General Secretary of the association. The manner of the investment of the funds, keeping of account and for annual or periodical audit of the account would be maintained by a certified Chartered Accountant situated at Chandigarh/ Mohali.

Various prominent personalities have fully endorsed and supported the Punjab Gatka Association for the cause of reviving the Gatka including other traditional Sikh martial art games and accord due recognition to centuries old these historical games evolved by Sikh Gurus for their followers for self-defence and fighting the perpetrators. They had lauded the devoted efforts of the Association and promised to help the association by all means to achieve the desired goals and targets for the development of Khalsa Martial Arts namely Gatka, Horse Racing, Neezabazi, Tent Pegging, Archery and Wrestling.

Activities:

The Punjab Gatka Association, in cooperation with Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sports & Cultural Club (Regd.) Anandpur Sahib has organised a mega event for honouring Gatkebaaz and Horse Riders during historic Hola Mohalla 2009 at Charn Ganga Stadium at Anandpur Sahib.

It is pertinent to mention here that the Punjab Gatka Association has chalked out its sports calendar for the session of year 2009-2010. It had been planned that the district level Gatka competitions would be organised during the months of August 2009 in the State whereas State level championship would be organised during the month of October 2009.

It has also been resolved that Punjab State Gatka team would represent in the National championship scheduled to hold during the month of January 2010. Before the National games the Punjab Gatka Association would conduct training camp for the Gatkabaaz to be selected for the championship.

Refresher course for gatkebaaz:

Punjab Gatka Association (PGA) is going to organise a special three day refresher course-cum-seminar at Shaheed Kanshi Ram College of Physical Education Bhagomajra near Kharar (SAS Nagar) from 17th July to 19th July 2009 for preparation of gatka officials (men & women) like referees, judges and technical advisors to conduct the upcoming competitions to be organised by the association.

A special standing committee on coaching and training has been constituted for the refresher courses to be conducted by the association. The standing committee, under the chairmanship of Mr. H.S Grewal General Secretary PGA and co-chairmen Mr. Avtar Singh, Gatka Instructor, Punjabi University Patiala and Mr. Jagdish Singh Brar, Vice President PGA would devise and materialize the course contents for this refresher course-cum-seminar on Gatka to hone the skills of gatkabaaz.

The other members of the standing committee are Mr. Janamjeet Singh (workshop instructor), Dr. Deep Singh (Technical Advisor), Giani Ranjit Singh (Advisor), Mr. Satwinder Singh, Mr. Sukhdarshan Singh and Mr. Jaswant Singh Boxing Coach Punjabi University Patiala (all Technical Workshop assistants).

The refresher course-cum-seminar would be presided over by Mr. Mr. H.S Grewal General Secretary of PGA. On the concluding day Mr. Harcharn Singh Bhullar President of PGA would present the certificates to the successful Gatka officials. The aspiring gatkebaaz both men and women, who desires to become certified gatka officials like referees, judges and technical advisors of the PGA, could join this camp.

The applicants should be between 20 and 45 years of age having qualification atleast matriculation and must possess atleast 6 to 8 years of practical experience of playing of Gatka. They have to attach an experience certificate as an evidence from a duly registered gatka akhakra/instistution along with form. Boarding and lodging to the participants would be provided by the PGA. After successful completion of this course the participants would be the certified gatka officials for Gatka events. The PGA would also issue certificates and identity cards to these gatka officials.
